[+/-] : iPhone 3G Tips and Tricks
Here's a list of the top tips and tricks for iPhone 2.0, geared toward more advanced users. Want to become a real iPhone power user? Read on.
1. Force-quit an application. Now that the iPhone is a real handheld computer, it's not immune from the occasional misbehaving application. If one freezes up on you, force-quit by pressing and holding the Home button for 6 seconds.
2. Make reservations the easy way. If you're looking up a phone number for something in Safari—say a restaurant or a hotel—there's no need to leave the page when you find it. Simply tap the number right on the page; the iPhone will dial it automatically.
3. Double-down with scrolling. Many Web pages contain separate text boxes with their own scroll bars. If you're trying to move around in one, try this: Zoom in, and then scroll with two fingers instead of one. That will let you scroll just inside the box and not affect the position of the entire page.
4. Maximize battery life, part 1. iPhone and iPhone 3G models have more sensors than just the accelerometer. For example, they have a separate sensor, situated right above the earpiece, that detects ambient light. The iPhone uses this sensor only once per session, though, just as you unlock the handset. But if you cover the sensor as you unlock the phone, you will trick the handset into thinking it's in a dark room, and it will power down the screen brightness as a result.
5. Maximize battery life, part 2. The iPhone's newfound e-mail synchronization abilities are useful, but they also drain the battery more quickly. If that's a concern, under Fetch New Data, set e-mail fetch time to Hourly, and turn Push off.
6. Grab a screenshot. The latest iPhone software lets you easily take screenshots of just about anything. To grab one, hold down the Home button and press the Sleep/Wake button. The iPhone will deposit a photo of the current screen in the iPhone's Photo application.
7. Get a bigger keyboard in Safari. Before you begin browsing, rotate the phone horizontally. Now tap the address bar. Voilà: a wider keyboard. Now if Apple would only add this feature in more applications instead of just Safari….
8. Keep Safari's address bar handy. Ever scroll pretty far down a Web page, only to find that the address bar has disappeared? No need to scroll back up—instead, tap the top part of the screen. The address bar will reappear, regardless of where you are on the actual Web page.
9. Enter punctuation quickly. To enter a period while using the on-screen keyboard, hold down the Punctuation key and slide your finger over to the Period button. Then release it. (This works for all punctuation, of course.)
10. Ride the dot-com wave. When keying in Web addresses, the iPhone gives you a very useful .com button that lets you add the four characters in one press. But as with the desktop version of Safari, you can even leave that out: Safari will automatically add it for you. Bonus tip: hold down the .com button; you'll be presented with a list of alternate domain endings, such as .net, .edu, and .org.

[+/-] : iPhone 3G baseband gets hacked - iPhone 3G unlock
The iPhone Dev Team has released their new Pwnage Tool 2.0.1 for iPhone 3G and iPod touch devices. A screenshot posted on their blog depicts an iPhone 3G with downgraded version of modern firmware. They’ve flashed the baseband radio with older firmware in an attempts to unlock it.
The baseband radio enables the iPhone 3G to search and connect to cellular signals and is crucial in jailbreaking the handset so it can work with any GSM carrier.
“We have accomplished this by being able to execute our own code on the baseband that allows us to circumvent security checks and flash the baseband with older, disallowed firmware. Please note this has been accomplished using software only, the iPhone 3G has not been disassembled or hardware modified in any way,” - they wrote on their blog. PwnageTool does not yet offer a software unlock for the 3G baseband, but will unlock the baseband on 2.0 OS for the 1st generation iPhone.

[+/-] : How to tether your iPhone 3G and browse the web using your 3G connection
Warning - Tethering your iPhone is against the iPhone data plan terms. AT&T could slap you with huge fees if you overuse this. I recommend only using it during emergencies.
Here's the basic rundown:
- Jailbreak your iPhone 3G
- Install 3Proxy and Terminal
- Create an ad-hoc Wi-fi network using your laptop
- Join the network with your iPhone
- Find the iPhone's IP address
- Open Terminal and run the proxy program
- Open Safari on your iPhone and open a web page
- Configure your browser to use the proxy
Step 1: Jailbreak your iPhone
|
Step 2: Install 3Proxy and Terminal
During the jailbreak, Cydia should have appeared on one of your app pages:
|
|
Step 3: Create an ad-hoc Wifi network using your laptop
Using whatever wireless software suite you have, create an ad-hoc network. On a Mac it's in the Airport menu, under "Create network...". Name it something inconspicuous. I called mine "baladoux".
|
Step 4: Find your iPhone's IP address
Then, hit the blue arrow next to it, and wait for your IP address to show up:
|
Step 5: Open Terminal and run the proxy program
Simple enough. Open Terminal, type "socks" and hit return.
|
Step 6: Open Safari on the iPhone and open a web page
Any page will do. I recommend cre.ations.net:
|
Step 7: Configure your browser
In Firefox, head to Preferences, and under Advanced, Network, hit Settings:
|
|
|
That should be all you need! Firefox should be able to browse the Internet through your iPhone's 3G connection.
Tethering costs a lot of battery life on the iPhone so make sure you have it plugged in. When you're done, make sure to quit Terminal by opening it back up and pressing and holding the Home button until it quits.

[+/-] : PwnageTool 2.0.1
It seems that some people have been having problems with our initial release, so we have PwnageTool 2.0.1 for you. It addresses the following issues:
- It auto-finds the bl39 and bl46 files better, if they’re on your computer
- It creates the ~/Library/iTunes/Device Support/ folder if not present, which should help with some 1600 errors people have been having.
- Many people have reported the PwnageTool not starting up at all (the icon never stops bouncing). This issue should be resolved now.
- The Sparkle AppCast URL is fixed in this version, so automatic updates should work for future releases.
Because of the AppCast URL fix, we recommend that everyone who downloaded PwnageTool 2.0 get this version, if they want to stay up to date automatically.
N.B: if PwnageTool 2.0 pwned your phone correctly the first time, you do not need to pwn again with 2.0.1.
The file can be found PwnageTool 2.0.1

[+/-] : Hackers Allow iPhone 3G Users to ‘Jailbreak’ New Device, Install Unauthorized Software
hackers have already released Pwnage 2.0.1. The software allows users of the new iPhone 3G, the original iPhone and the iPod Touch to “jailbreak” the devices and allow the unauthorized installation of third-party software applications not available at Apple’s App Store.
There’s one important distinction to be made between “jailbreaking” and “unlocking”.
While Pwnage 2.0.1 effectively “jailbreaks” the iPhone 3G, iPhone and iPod Touch to usher in third-party software applications not available at Apple’s App Store, the software doesn’t “unlock” the phones. Unlocking allows phones to be used on unauthorized cell phone networks.

[+/-] : The iPhone 3G gets hacked
Brazilians steal iPhone hacking crown from Italians
Only five days after its official launch, the iPhone 3G has been hacked.
Brazilian company DesbloqueioBr claims to be the first to hack the iPhone to allow its use on mobile carriers other than those currently offering it.
Using a similar method to the TurboSIM solution used for the original iPhone, DesbloqueioBr's hack involves both a hardware SIM attachment and a firmware alteration to bypass the iPhone's security measures. The hack fools the phone into thinking it's connected to an accepted carrier, allowing users to call, SMS and use data on their desired carrier.
Apple has announced plans to release the iPhone 3G in Brazil, but at present there are no release dates or carrier information. Those who wish to use the hack must first source the phone from a country where it's sold. The company says it will charge between $US250 and $375 to hack the phone.
DesbloqueioBr is the first company to officially release a hack for the iPhone. However, at least two well-known groups within the iPhone hacking community are working on software to unlock and 'jailbreak' the iPhone 3G, making it capable of not only working on any desired carrier, but also of running unauthorised third-party applications.
The closest to a full software hack appears to be the iPhone Dev Team. The anonymous group of hackers are currently working on both a software hack and a program that allows users to install customised firmware on their iPhone. The group is currently locked in a war of words with former member Geohot, who has also voiced intentions to release a software hack.
The best known iPhone hacker, Zibri, has not revealed any plans to release a software hack, though he has demonstrate successful hacks on the majority of betas leading up to the final release of the iPhone's 2.0 firmware.
