[+/-] : Iphone 3G Unlock:Yellowsn0w 0.9.8 Unlock Tool Out for iPhone 2.2.1

It has been revealed that yellowsn0w (the popular iPhone unlock tool) has reached version 0.9.8, being capable of unlocking even iPhone 3Gs under firmware 2.2.1. While not announced on the iPhone Dev Team's blog yet, the makers of the tool tweeted the news just hours ago.

The iPhone Dev Team's post reads, “iphone_dev: yellowsn0w 0.9.8 is on Cydia for those who were seeing wifi or slowness issues with 0.9.7. This is NOT anything related to 02.30.03 baseband.”

At least one user confirms that “the Wi-Fi issue is gone on [his] UK O2 prepaid 3g 16gig running an O2 Germany and Swisscom SIM.” The post ends with a sincere “thanks” going out to the iPhone Dev Team.

An extended description of the update, as posted over at the hackint0sh forums, goes a bit like this:

“The 0.9.6 version worked for many but it had a hard-coded address for the airplane mode call. The hard-coded address changes depending on FW version (2.2 vs 2.2.1 so far). The 0.9.7 version tried to make it universal and applicable across all future updates. Although it worked for most people, it did have the side effect of keeping wi-fi off after the toggle. The 0.9.8 version fixes that at the expense of going back to hard-coded addresses. That affects us more than you.”

[+/-] : iPhone3g unlock:Yellowsn0w iPhone 3G unlocker v0.9.6 now available

The release of yellown0w, scheduled for New Year’s Eve, was postponed a day due to a small problem and finally, it has been released into the wild.

Yellowsn0w is the first working iPhone 3G unlock program that doesn’t need any tampering with your SIM card. In fact, you won’t notice any difference in your iPhone’s operation, except of course that your 3rd-party SIM now works after installing.

Yellowsn0w can be installed using both Windows and Mac systems, and easily uninstalled using Cydia, iTunes or the good old Command Line

According to the DevTeam, v0.9.6 of Yellowsn0w should “should fix EVEN MORE problems,” although they did not go into specifics of this release. So if the previous versions of this unlock hack did not work for you, try this one out…. or wait for the final v1.0 to come out, which probably should not take too long to arrive judging by how fast new versions are coming out.

As before, Yellowsn0w is available via Installer.app/Cydia at the following repositories: http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com (Cydia) or http://i.yellowsn0w.com (Installer.app).

And, of course, prior to being able to use it, you will need to

upgrade your iPhone 3G to the latest iPhone firmware version (v2.2) from Apple and then use QuickPwn to activate and jailbreak the device.

Installation instructions and additional notes are below…

To use it:
1. Install BossPrefs and Yellowsn0w from Cydia/Installer
2. Disable everything in BossPrefs
3. Reboot your iPhone using BossPrefs
4. Wait for the iPhone to boot up
5. Take out your SIM card and reinsert it back in
6. Wait a moment or two
7. In settings turn on Airplane mode
8. Turn off Airplane mode
9. All done!

Additional notes:
- As of v 0.9.4 there’s no longer a one-minute delay step. If you don’t see your carrier when your homescreen comes up, you may still need a SIM reinsert (for now).
- If you are in the U.S. and are trying this with T-Mobile, you must turn off the 3G switch in Settings.
- No PIN support yet
- The unlock will silently quit on anything other than baseband 02.28.00. It detects the wrong version and just quits to avoid any damage. Please double check your Modem Firmware setting in Settings->General->About....

[+/-] : iphone 3G unlock: iPhone boost to 32GB and home activation?

The primary reason appeared to be the new phone's much lower price, which required tying the new purchase to an in-store contract activation.

However, the in-store contract process not only takes time, but also doesn't work for foreign buyers who want to purchase an iPhone in the US for use overseas. Apple have hinted that possibility for selling the iPhone 3G without a contract in the US; it's already sold unlocked at full price in other countries that demand this option by law.

The latest whispers on the Apple iPhone 3G to hit the net waves is that Apple is about to boost the top end iPhone 3G’s capacity up to a nice 32GB.

With 8GB supplies running low,32GB might just be on the horizon. The timing for this seems just a tad odd on the heels of the Apple Let’s Rock iPod refresh, however when you take into consideration how Apple was forced to boost the iPhone Nano up to 16GB along with dropping the 4GB limited edition, it could well make sense.

There are also whispers that Apple customers can gain look forward to the activate-in-home option, but we’ll just have to wait for any confirmation on these whispers.

Apple said it will exchange the ultra-compact USB adapters for a redesigned model, without charge, in retail stores and online starting Oct. 10.

Apple told users to immediately stop using the small adaptors, which are about the size of the plug end of an extension cord.

In lieu of the adapters, and until replacements are received, users should charge their iPhone 3G phones by connecting them to their Mac or PC with the USB cable that came with their iPhone,

[+/-] : Apple's iPhone 3G is speedy, but lacks the 'oomph' factor

The iPhone 3G supports the third generation of mobile phone standards (UMTS/HSDPA) and GPS navigation. Matthias Kremp, of the news website Spiegel Online, says users will see the biggest benefit in the iPhone's internet access speed.

"A HSDPA mobile from another manufacturer needs a lot longer to download the same page."

Kremp attributes the phone's speed to its Safari browser and its quick start-up speed. The phone outperforms its peers in GPS mapping. It does not rely on GPS input when determining a location, but also measures proximity to nearby mobile telephone masts and surrounding wireless LAN networks.

Nonetheless, because of some software shortfalls, the iPhone is not ready to function as a full-fledged navigator. The phone's Google Maps application can pinpoint its location and give basic directions. But a special program will be needed before it can be used as a real-time navigator.

Prior to iPhone's release, a company specializing in navigation software called TomTomannounced that it would release such software. However, it has yet to be decided whether Apple will license the software for the iPhone.

Apple does offer applications from third parties on its "App Store," accessible on the iPhone via the iTunes application. The store started off with 560 programs, 200 of which were games. Offers included an AOL chat provider, an eBay program and several productivity applications. About 140 are free. Most of the others cost less than 10 euros (16 dollars).

Along with the UMTS and GPS hardware, the iPhone also updated Version 2.0 of its software. First generation iPhone users can download the system free of charge. IPod Touch users can download it for a fee of 8 euros.

Business people may find some of the system's features appealing. Apple has licensed Microsoft's "Active Sync" software so the iPhone can access Microsoft's ubiquitous exchange server. "It's child's play to set up and the offers are pretty solid," commented Michael Spehr of the daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

The jury is still out on the iPhone's touch screen keyboard. Spehr said he found the virtual keyboard "cumbersome and an acquired taste," noting that he preferred the Blackberry's physical keyboard. Others said they found that the iPhone's virtual keyboard meets user's needs and, after a while, becomes easier to use than the Blackberry.

Reviewers were critical of the iPhone's battery life. Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal said he found it difficult to make the battery charge last an entire business day. He only managed to control the iPhone's power consumption after discovering its energy saving function. Mossberg and Edward Baig of USA Today recommend swithching off the iPhone's 3G functions when not in use.

Most testers said they would either want a longer battery life or a back-up battery. Some also called for a more integrated camera with video functionality. Fees levied by T-Mobile in Germany have been criticized as too costly. Even though the sale price has dropped significantly, a lifetime of T-Mobile fees could add up quickly, they note.

[+/-] : Old iPhones still in demand on used market

Some users are finding more to like with the first-generation model of the smart phone.

How much is that old iPhone in your pocket worth? Enough, it turns out, to swap it straight across for the just-launched, shiny, twice-as-fast 3G model -- if not more.

No Joke.

Unlike most used gadgets, which plummet in value as soon as they're powered up, year-old iPhone 1.0s are still fetching big bucks. To understand why, get a load of how others are cashing in on last summer's technology.

"I just got the new 3G iPhone, so I'm selling my old one," said a seller wanting $350 for a slightly scratched 8-gigabyte first-generation iPhone listed for sale on Craigslist this week.

Wait. A new iPhone 3G can be had for $200.

Why pay more for an old one? Nutso, right?

Actually, that's how many secondhand buyers describe exclusive-carrier AT&T's costlier service plan for the 3G. Do the math, and you'll realize it costs $360 more over two years than the plan offered to iPhone 1.0 users. So, the actual cost of a new iPhone starts at $560.

Among resellers, the money generally isn't as good on Craigslist, but it's a quick, clean flip. Dealmakers range from national gadget fix-it shop RapidRepair in Kalamazoo, Mich., to entrepreneur Slava Franchuk of Clackamas, Ore.

Their philosophy: AT&Who?

The 21-year-old Franchuk, a Portland State University student, offers up to $300 for a functional 1.0 iPhone. He then "jailbreaks" it from AT&T to work with other wireless carriers. (Hackers haven't figured out how to unlock the 3G yet.)

In a week, Franchuk says he can resell five phones for a $50 profit on each.

"A lot of people want an iPhone," he said, "but they don't want to leave T-Mobile."

On eBay, the going rate is $375 to $600.

Selling there? Here's a tip: Offer international shipping. There's crazy demand in China, Russia and other countries where people can't get the gadget from their carriers. Of course, to get top dollar, you have to figure out how to unyoke the iPhone from AT&T on your own.

"I was in China in April," said Josh Bancroft, the supergeek behind TinyScreenfuls.com. "Although it's not officially available there, the iPhone was everywhere -- just like the U.S."

Bancroft can't recall another gadget that has ever commanded as much in the secondhand market.

Of course, the used iPhone market is bound to crash. Apple, Bancroft notes, is on the verge of shipping the iPhone 3G to 72 countries. So, sell those old ones while they're hot.

[+/-] : iPhone 3G Tips and Tricks

Here's a list of the top tips and tricks for iPhone 2.0, geared toward more advanced users. Want to become a real iPhone power user? Read on.

1. Force-quit an application. Now that the iPhone is a real handheld computer, it's not immune from the occasional misbehaving application. If one freezes up on you, force-quit by pressing and holding the Home button for 6 seconds.

2. Make reservations the easy way. If you're looking up a phone number for something in Safari—say a restaurant or a hotel—there's no need to leave the page when you find it. Simply tap the number right on the page; the iPhone will dial it automatically.

3. Double-down with scrolling. Many Web pages contain separate text boxes with their own scroll bars. If you're trying to move around in one, try this: Zoom in, and then scroll with two fingers instead of one. That will let you scroll just inside the box and not affect the position of the entire page.

4. Maximize battery life, part 1. iPhone and iPhone 3G models have more sensors than just the accelerometer. For example, they have a separate sensor, situated right above the earpiece, that detects ambient light. The iPhone uses this sensor only once per session, though, just as you unlock the handset. But if you cover the sensor as you unlock the phone, you will trick the handset into thinking it's in a dark room, and it will power down the screen brightness as a result.

5. Maximize battery life, part 2. The iPhone's newfound e-mail synchronization abilities are useful, but they also drain the battery more quickly. If that's a concern, under Fetch New Data, set e-mail fetch time to Hourly, and turn Push off.

6. Grab a screenshot. The latest iPhone software lets you easily take screenshots of just about anything. To grab one, hold down the Home button and press the Sleep/Wake button. The iPhone will deposit a photo of the current screen in the iPhone's Photo application.

7. Get a bigger keyboard in Safari. Before you begin browsing, rotate the phone horizontally. Now tap the address bar. Voilà: a wider keyboard. Now if Apple would only add this feature in more applications instead of just Safari….

8. Keep Safari's address bar handy. Ever scroll pretty far down a Web page, only to find that the address bar has disappeared? No need to scroll back up—instead, tap the top part of the screen. The address bar will reappear, regardless of where you are on the actual Web page.

9. Enter punctuation quickly. To enter a period while using the on-screen keyboard, hold down the Punctuation key and slide your finger over to the Period button. Then release it. (This works for all punctuation, of course.)

10. Ride the dot-com wave. When keying in Web addresses, the iPhone gives you a very useful .com button that lets you add the four characters in one press. But as with the desktop version of Safari, you can even leave that out: Safari will automatically add it for you. Bonus tip: hold down the .com button; you'll be presented with a list of alternate domain endings, such as .net, .edu, and .org.
